Wer hasst dich so, Shawna?
Blurb
Shawna McCarthy thinks that she has escaped Darcy Cummings by moving to Redwood, California with her parents. But it seems to be at a great cost. No sooner do they pull into Redwood than Old Lady Rachel of the general store and Pete of Pete's Gas and Garage stare at her. They tell her that she can't move into her new house --- a log cabin in the Sierra Nevada Mountains that no one has lived in for one hundred years. They won't tell her why. They seem to think it's dangerous.
Shawna takes a walk in the woods behind her new cabin to be alone to think about Darcy and why she moved here. She remembers a Friday night about two months before when Darcy called her up at her old home back in Virginia and asked her to entertain one of his girlfriends for him and not to bring her over to his house until ten. He was entertaining another pesky girl who wanted to make him a birthday dinner. So when Shawna brought the first girl over at ten, she ran into the second girl running topless around Darcy's house. The second girl was pursuing him with a birthday present. Then Shawna had to help him break up a fight between the girls and take both of them home. After that, Shawna never wanted to speak to Darcy again.
Her father had been interviewing for new jobs. She hid the other acceptance letters just long enough to make him accept an offer from the Forestry Service in Redwood. She wanted to go there because it was on the other side of the country from Virginia where she used to live. It was too small a town to be on any map, and Darcy would never be able to find her.
Shawna's walk ends when she runs into a tree with the inscription I CAN NEVER DIE carved into its bark. She barely has time to ponder it when a masked gunman shoots at her and chases her through the forest to the top of the waterfalls where she hides behind a tree. The gunman surprises her and takes off his mask. She screams and topples over the falls. He saves her - but it's Darcy!
