As soon as her lips touched his lips, she felt something funny. Something pinched sharply. Then she heard a loud groan. Phil's flushed and red face went stark white in an instant. He staggered away from her, put his hands to his throat, and stared at her with an accusing look that she would never forget as long as she lived. He extended his arm and pointed at her. He seemed to be trying to say something. His lips were moving, but no words came out.
Phil collapsed into a heap on the cafeteria floor. His mouth sagged open.
For a long instant, nobody moved. The kids were all frozen in place. Then everybody seemed to be screaming and crying at once. Someone was pushing his way through the crowd toward where Nikki and the cycling team were standing. Harry was bending over the fallen body. He was taking Phil’s pulse and looking at his wristwatch. Then he was pulling back Phil's eyelids just as his father, the doctor, had taught him.
Harry looked straight up at Nikki. “He's dead."
