Klassenfahrt ins Grauen
Excerpt
“Did you trip and fall? Did you break your leg?” Her friend raised her voice to make herself heard.
Berry tried to keep her wits about her. She reached for the faucets to turn them off. She didn’t need anymore of this shower. The faucets wouldn’t turn off no matter what. They just kept on jetting out at her full force.
In a panic she looked around for a wrench or a tool. Naturally none of them were in the shower. They would be in the work shed next to the kitchen. Maybe the workmen in the backyard had them. Berry didn’t.
Again she tried to shut the water off, putting all of her strength into it. Again it didn’t work. The water now felt like a giant pair of watery arms grasping her all over from her neck down to her hips — up and down, up and down. Water was supposed to flow downward only. It was gravity, wasn’t it? Yet this water felt as if it could flow in any direction.
“Kid, if you don’t answer me I’m gonna call the police!” Edie threatened. “I’m gonna think you slipped and fell. Somebody better help you pretty quick.”
The hot water handle popped off and flew at Berry. It struck her in the cheek. The cold water handle popped off at almost the same instant. It landed with a clatter on the tile floor.
