Horror in Hilton Head
Blurb
Jan Ewing is a girl with her mind made up. She wants to leave home and be her own woman at eighteen, just a couple of weeks before graduation from Hilton Head High. Her mother does nothing except nag, nag, nag. Her father has just divorced her mother and left home, too. Jan decides to persuade her boyfriend, Bruce, to run away with her to Florida and strike out on their own just as they have always planned to do someday.
She goes to the mall. She walks around. A girl she knows from school, Karen Cox, dashes out of a jewellery store. A guy wearing a black sheath hood over his face is chasing her. Jan watches in horror as Karen screams and the guy shoots her. Karen falls headfirst into the lagoon in the middle of the plaza where there is an elaborate fountain, a statue of a mermaid, and ducks squawking. The guy wearing the hood leaps in after her.
When the murderer surfaces moments later, Karen Cox isn't with him. People scream as the guy in the hood dashes away and escapes. The police don't make it there in time to arrest him.
Jan has just witnessed a murder. Is this what it's like being on her own for the first time? Jan's about ready to find out.
