But Melissa's thoughts were something nobody else could share. She hadn't told a living soul about her own mysterious letter in the mail saying, “Nighty night!" or her feeling that someone was stalking and watching her, too. Did some kook have it in for anyone named “Melissa"?
Melissa was so much in a daze she hardly noticed when the police handcuffed her and led her away to the squad car. She hardly noticed Randy following behind shouting obscenities. What if someone had gotten the wrong Melissa? What if someone had been after her all along? What if this girl Mel had just happened to get unlucky and get in the way --- be in the wrong place at the wrong time? Would this stalker be back again to kill her, content in the meantime to frame her and use her as a fall guy?
Melissa was dimly aware that the police were reading her Miranda Rights. One policeman was droning on and on: “You have the right to remain silent . . . Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to speak with an attorney . . . "
She wasn't really listening. How could she? Someone was staring at her from behind one of the sand dunes. This time it wasn't Randy. It wasn't Joanna or Elaine either. Oh, no! All she could see were two bright yellow eyes.
