The Dead is a ghost story set in Virginia Beach. The heroine, Jemma Parker, has a tyrannical boyfriend who tries to control everything that she does. She tries to please him, but her efforts are never good enough.
One night Jemma is arguing with him on the phone. He says that he is coming over to her house right now.She tells him to "drop dead!" and hangs up. A policeman arrives at her door instead and informs Jemma that her boyfriend has been killed in a mysterious accident along the way.
Jemma feels both sad and guilty. But that is nothing compared to what follows. Now she finds that a hand is reaching out from beyond the grave to control her life. And now there is no way to fight back. It seems that her old boyfriend has gotten his way at last --- even if he had to die to do it!
