Leslie shivered and got into the shower. Aah . . . The musack was lulling her into a kind of pleasant daze. She was standing there on her feet as her mind chilled out and she thought about nothing at all. And she was actually beginning to feel warm again all the way down to her bones.
Suddenly the musack stopped. The newscaster broke in:
We interrupt this broadcast to bring you late breaking news. This just in. Alert! The girl involved in the sensational disappearance case that has had the beach community of Sandbridge up in arms all week has made headlines again. Alicia Parks's body has just disappeared from the hospital morgue! No one was seen entering or leaving the building. No suspicious vehicles have been sighted in the area. But the Virginia Beach police are not going to be foiled again as they were the first time. They have set up roadblocks all along the Virginia Beach Expressway, along I-64 East and West, at both entrances to the Hampton Roads Tunnel, and at all major intersections. All suspicious vehicles will be searched . . .
Leslie leaped out of the shower, flicked off the radio, and just barely remembered to throw a towel around herself. She raced down the hallway to her bedroom window. She raised the glass windowpane and shouted down onto the street below, “Wait a minute, Jim! I've gotta come with you.”
